Writer's picture: Brian CzechBrian Czech

Arepa is a type of food made from ground maize dough and stuffed with a filling. Arepas have been part of the of South and Central America since pre-Columbian times.

Primarily arepas are found in the cuisines of Colombia and Venezuela. This recipe uses Maseca (corn flour) but is commonly made with Masarepa (pre-cooked corn meal). Regular corn meal can be used but the results will be for a less smooth, crumbly result. Arepas do not require a filling, but cheese is the most common when a filling is used.
