This recipe is for the traditional Polish pastry dessert. In many ways it is reminiscent of a cream puff. In Poland it is referred to as a "Carpathian Cream Cake" as the bake pastry resembles a mountainous region.
There is another version of this type of cake. It uses layers of puff pastry with custard like layers and is called a "Papal Cream Cake" as it was the favorite dessert of the late Pope John Paul II.
The pastry cream filling here can be used in any other pastry recipe like Eclairs, Cream Puffs, etc.
